Fix an Invalid Lineup by filling every required position or using Generate Best Lineup. Then inspect offense, defense, specialists, strategy items, playbooks, and visuals. Use saved lineups, compare eligible substitutes, and review chemistry, Ability Point costs, and strategy effects instead of Overall alone. Challenges, Objectives, and EVOs provide progression routes, but live programs rotate, so verify the in-game menu before committing an item.

Clear an Invalid Lineup before optimizing

EA Help says an Invalid Lineup message appears when one or more required positions are missing. Return to Lineup, identify the empty required slots, and fill them with eligible items before trying the activity again. Generate Best Lineup can quickly populate empty positions from the collection. This is a validity check, not a verdict that the generated roster is the strongest possible fit for a particular scheme or objective.

A complete College Ultimate Team lineup spans offense, defense, specialists, strategy items, and playbooks and visuals. A roster can look complete on the offense tab while another required area remains empty. Move through every lineup category after opening packs, removing an item, or creating an empty saved lineup. If the error follows a substitution, confirm that the replacement is eligible for the selected position rather than assuming any player item can occupy any slot.

  1. Open Lineup and inspect every required offense and defense position.
  2. Check special teams and specialist slots as well as the main depth chart.
  3. Add eligible items manually or use Generate Best Lineup to fill missing positions.
  4. Save, retry the target activity, and optimize only after the lineup is valid.

Create saved lineups for separate tests

The lineup selection screen supports multiple saved lineups. You can create a new lineup, select the active lineup, rename saved versions, and delete versions you no longer need. When creating one, EA provides two starting choices: begin with an empty lineup or copy the active lineup. Copying is useful when you want to preserve a working structure while testing a different player group, chemistry direction, or objective lineup.

Give each saved lineup a name that states its purpose. That naming advice is ours, but it uses the official rename feature to prevent avoidable mistakes. A label such as objective test, alternate scheme, or main lineup is more useful than a generic number when several versions share most of the same cards. Before entering a game, confirm which saved lineup is active; merely creating or editing another version does not make it the selected one.

  1. Open Lineup, then choose Change Active Lineup.
  2. Select Create New Lineup and choose empty or copy active lineup.
  3. Enter a purpose-based name and save the new version.
  4. Return to the selection screen and explicitly set the version you intend to use as active.

Substitute and compare eligible players

To substitute, highlight the position, select the assigned player, choose the substitution action, and select an eligible replacement from the collection. The same screen can compare eligible players before the change. That comparison is the correct place to inspect attributes side by side; a higher Overall does not by itself prove a card better serves the role, chemistry plan, active objective, or ability budget.

Our recommended comparison order is eligibility first, role-relevant attributes second, then chemistry, abilities, and current objectives. This is an editorial framework, not an official ranking formula. The available candidates and their upgrade state belong to the player's collection, so a universal starter list would become outdated and could not account for the chosen scheme.

  • Only eligible players appear for a position-specific substitution.
  • Use the built-in comparison before confirming the change.
  • Review chemistry, abilities, and objectives after the attributes.
  • Save and validate after each meaningful roster change.

Finish the depth chart and specialist groups

Players can be moved to another eligible position or a different depth-chart slot from the lineup screen. When one player moves, other players in that depth chart automatically shift to fill available positions. Review the resulting order instead of assuming every automatic shift matches your intended usage. Specialists are a separate lineup group, so a player appearing on offense or defense does not remove the need to inspect specialist assignments.

Generate Best Lineup can update the entire lineup or a selected group: offense, defense, special teams, or specialists. It is useful for establishing a valid baseline after a large collection change. EA describes it as filling eligible items to build the highest-Overall lineup available, which is not the same as optimizing a user-selected chemistry, scheme, or objective. Preserve a copy before running it if you want to compare the generated result with a deliberate setup.

  1. Review the offense and defense starters and backups.
  2. Open special teams and specialists rather than stopping at the main tabs.
  3. Inspect every automatic depth-chart shift after moving a player.
  4. Use Generate Best Lineup as a baseline, then restore intentional assignments where needed.

Audit chemistry, abilities, and strategy items

Chemistry Management shows available chemistries, current progress, active tiers, contributing players, and the players receiving boosts. Some player items have chemistry options that are not active until equipped. Inspect both contribution and recipient lists before replacing a player; a card can affect the wider team even when its individual attributes are not the only visible change.

Ability Management lets you review active abilities and Ability Points, activate or deactivate eligible player and superstar abilities, and see their AP costs. Active abilities must remain within the team's available AP budget. Separately, Strategy Item Management shows equipped strategy items, allows changes or removal, and identifies players affected by their boosts. Some strategy items can also affect team or scheme chemistry.

  • Confirm that intended chemistry options are equipped and contributing.
  • Check both contributors and recipients for every active chemistry tier.
  • Keep activated abilities within the displayed AP budget.
  • Verify which players receive each equipped strategy-item boost.

Set playbooks and visuals deliberately

EA's lineup help identifies playbooks and visuals as part of the complete lineup alongside offense, defense, specialists, and strategy items. Review those areas after changing or generating a lineup so the active version contains the intended presentation and playbook selections. The official lineup article does not claim that a visual item produces a competitive boost, so this guide does not assign one.

Choose playbooks according to formations and concepts you are prepared to use, not merely because a roster has a high Overall. That is strategic advice rather than a confirmed chemistry formula. If you are comparing two playbooks, copy the active lineup, change only the relevant selection, and use the saved names to identify the test. Keeping players and other management settings stable makes the comparison easier to interpret.

Use Challenges, Objectives, and EVOs as entry points

EA Help recommends Challenges and Objectives as starting points for new Ultimate Team players. Challenges can teach the basics and award rewards, while Objectives track specific goals across the mode. Rewards can feed future lineup decisions through players, packs, Coins, upgrade items, Field Pass XP, and other earned content. The Ultimate Team deep dive also says select item objectives can be viewed from the lineup screen, connecting roster management with the progression task being pursued.

EVOs add another path. Official descriptions say EVO items can raise caps, unlock upgrade paths, add or improve abilities, expand chemistry options, and add objectives for an item. The August 6 update also warns that a player item cannot be swapped after an EVO is assigned. Review eligibility, the offered path, objectives, and the player's role in the lineup before committing; that caution follows the irreversible selection rule and is not a claim that one EVO target is best.

Live-content warning: this section is verified as of August 11, 2026. EA says free, objective-earned, and purchasable EVOs appear in a dedicated menu and cycle as programs release; Core EVOs refresh, while program-specific EVOs and Field Pass rewards can be time-sensitive. Supercharged was the current launch event in the August 7 announcement, but current names, prices, eligibility, objectives, rewards, and availability must be checked in game. Do not rely on this page as a permanent event calendar.

  1. Check current Challenges and Objectives for an achievable progression target.
  2. Review the target player's eligibility and all visible EVO path conditions.
  3. Copy the active lineup before assigning or testing a major upgrade.
  4. Confirm in-game availability and deadlines because live programs rotate.
